Let’s face it - we are all trying to do the best thing for our body, health and general well-being, but sometimes knowing what is wrong and right can be confusing! Below I have compiled some beauty and skincare questions that we always ask, but never really know the “real” answer to. Equipped with these answers, I hope that you can continue to live a better and healthy lifestyle.
How often should you wash your hair?
This is a topic that almost everyone has an opinion on, but at the end of the day, how often you should wash your hair comes down to your hair type and style. See below for my recommendations:
Dry Hair: If your hair is brittle, it may be best to wash once a week as this can help keep your hair smooth and silky. I recommend using a moisturising shampoo as this can help keep your hair supple and unbroken. If your hair is extremely dehydrated, try rubbing conditioner into your tips and leave it in until your next wash.
Oily Hair: If your hair is naturally oily or you use product to style your hair, you may need to wash it every second day. This can help keep the oil under control and your hair healthy. Some may need to wash their hair every day depending on their natural oil production. For this hair type, it may be best to wash with a lightweight shampoo and a conditioner that is designed for “oily hair”.
Normal Hair: Washing your hair once or twice a week is perfect for people with normal hair (hair that isn’t too dry or too oily). Once again, if you are someone that uses product regularly, you may need to wash it more often.
How often should you change your toothbrush?
Toothbrushes should be replaced every 9 - 12 weeks. If you have been sick, it is best to do so sooner. When in doubt look at the bristles. If they are frayed, they may not clean your teeth as thoroughly. When replacing your toothbrush there are two options to consider:
Manual Toothbrush: The benefits of a manual toothbrush is that it is portable, ready to use every time you need it, makes no noise and you have complete control over the pressure it puts on your teeth and gums.
Electric Toothbrush: An electric toothbrush requires charging, which can make it more easy to travel with. That being said, the rotating movement of the bristles makes it easier to clean between teeth and at the gum line.
How often do you need a new pillow?
I recommend changing your pillow cover every two weeks (or less if possible), and changing your pillow itself every three months. The reason for this is because dirt, oil and dead skin cells can get trapped in the fabric, which can lead to breakouts and blocked skin. Another reason you need to change your pillow every three months is because dust mites can build up - eww! This can intensify asthma, and trigger allergic reactions.
How often should you wash your sheets?
As a general rule of thumb, it is a good idea to wash your sheets every 10-14 days. Not only do your sheets endure sweat, body oils and dirt, but they can also host a number of bacteria and microorganisms. Like your pillows, these things can contribute to triggering allergies and skin problems - no one wants that!
Now you are equipped with the answers to your most asked beauty and lifestyle questions, you can live life a little more hygienic and healthy.
